The Right Hand (picking hand)

Using a Pick

A Pick is held between the index finger and the thumb.

The pick plays down on the down beats and up on the up beats. This is true for strumming and when picking single notes. The pick does what your foot does when you tap it to a beat.

Finger Style

In a finger style, the right hand is "lettered."

  • P = Thumb
  • I = Index
  • M = Middle
  • A = Ring
  • E = Pinky

The pinky is rarely used so you should not expect to use it. Flamenco style guitar uses the pinky.

The thumb is assigned to strings 6,5, and 4. The index finger plays string 3, the middle 2, and the ring 1.

My Favorite Picks

A hobby all in itself!!

P-I-M-A

Picking Hand is "lettered" P I M A

E is used for the Pinky but it is rarely used, too short!!

Scales and Melodies

Alternate i and m pattern

Finger Style Strumming Patterns

Thumb (P) plays bass notes Index (i) "flicks" or strums down and up beats.

Planting
